Gangs first made an important appearance in GTA2. You were able to choose which gang you wished to work for, and each gang had their own district which they controlled (turf). If you were disliked by the Yakuza and happened to venture into their territory you wouldn't expect a warm welcome. You could tilt the scale of respect by delivering car bombs to rival gangs and by doing other unthinkable things.
GTA3 features gangs again, but this time with much more importance. Each gang has its own way in the corrupt 3D world, with their own traditions and ways of doing business.
